The Granny

"The Granny"...
Most people will immediately think of the Granny Square;
that multi-colored square done in rounds of 3-dc shells and
uses up small balls of left-over yarn from other projects.
It makes a great take-along project.

For the purpose of this tutorial, think of "the granny" as a type
of crochet rather than a piece of fabric that is usually square.

Welcome to GrannyCrochet -the technique of making fabric by starting
in the center and working outwards using only 3-dc shells.

The corners of the granny are a bit bulky because the corners
require 2 shells (6 stitches) to make the turn. The rectangular granny
has more bulk at the ends because 3 shells (9 stitches) are required.
I am offering an alternate method of the first round.

A condensed version of the rectangle pattern follows:

The complete pattern can be found here:
Rectangle Granny

Chain 13, in the 4th chain from hook work 2 dc, chain 2, 3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc, chain 1,
(skip 2 chain, work 3 dc in next chain, chain 1,) 2 times, skip 2 chains, chain 1,
in the last chain work (3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc, 2 chain, 3 dc, chain 1)
(skip 2 chains, work 3 dc in the next free loop, chain 1,) 2 times,
slip stitch to the 3rd chain of the beginning chain-3. This ends the first round.

Now for the alternate version of round 1 for the rectngle granny:

Notice that the 3-dc shells have only 2 stitches
in the chain.
