Right Front Button Band:

Row 1: (Join yarn in lower corner, chain 1, sc) all in same stitch, sc along straight part of front, stopping at neck shaping. NO chain, Turn.

Left Front Buttonhole Band:

Row 1: (Join yarn in lower corner, chain 1, sc) all in same stitch, sc along straight part of front, stopping at neck shaping. NO chain, Turn.

Figure buttonhole placement:
These instructions will place 4 buttonholes evenly spaced down the front.

• Count number of sc on left front band. [24]
• Subtract 1 sc for each buttonhole. [4] (24 - 4 = 20)
• Subtract the sc's above the top button and below the bottom button. This must produce a number divisible by 3 because there are three sections between the 4 buttonholes. (2 sc above and 3 sc below will work.) (20 - 5 = 15; 15 divided by 3 = 5). There will be 5 sc between buttonholes.

• Skip first sc, sc in next sc. (This covers 2 sc above the top button)
• (Chain 1, Skip 1), Sc in next 5 sc; (Chain 1, Skip 1), Sc in next 5 sc; (Chain 1, Skip 1), Sc in next 5 sc; (Chain 1, Skip 1), Sc in next 3 sc. Finish off.

Both bands need one more row to complete. The edging (see below) will do that.

Sew sleeves to body.

Weave all loose ends.

Edging:
(Join yarn with slip stitch, chain1, sc) all in same sc, sc in each sc of back, sc in end of rows on neck shaping, 2 sc in first sc at top of right button band, sc down right front, 3 sc in bottom corner, sc in each free loop of row 1, 3 sc in bottom of left front, sc in each sc and chain 1 space of left front, 2 sc in last sc of buttonhole band, sc in end of each row of neck shaping, sc in each sc of back. Slip stitch to first sc. Finish off.

Sew buttons in place. (1/4" buttons are the right size)
Weave in all loose ends.

Chain (25, 27, 29)

• Row 1: Sc in back ridge across. Chain 1, Turn. All work is back loop only for entire hat.
• Row 2: Sc in first (20, 22, 24) sc. Leave remaining 4 sts unworked. NO CHAIN, Turn.
• Row 3: Skip first sc, sc in remaining (19, 21, 23) sc. Chain 1, Turn.
• Row 4: Sc in first (20, 22, 24) sc, sc in end of prev. row, and in next 4 sc. Chain 1, Turn.
• Row 5: Sc across. Chain 1, Turn.
• Row 6: Sc in first (16, 18, 20), Leave remaining 8 sts unworked. NO CHAIN, Turn.
• Row 7: Skip first sc, sc in remaining (15, 17, 19) sc. Chain 1, Turn.
• Row 8: Sc in first (16, 18, 20) sc, sc in end of previous row, and in next 8 sc. Chain 1, Turn.
• Row 9: Sc across, Chain 1, Turn.
• Row 10: Sc in first (20, 22, 24) sc. Leave remaining 4 sts. unworked. NO CHAIN, Turn.

11 inch hat (chain 25):
Repeat rows (3 - 10) 4 times more, and rows (3 - 8) once more. Do not finish off.

12 inch hat (chain27):
Repeat rows (3 - 10) 5 times more, and rows (3 - 8) once more. Do not finish off.

13 inch hat (chain 29):
Repeat rows (3 - 10) 6 times more, and rows (3 - 8) once more. Do not finish off.

Joining:

• Right sides of first and last rows together.
• Work in both loops of first row and inside loops of last row, slip stitch first (18, 20, 22) sts.
• Turn cap right side out -wrong sides of first and last rows together.
• Work in both loops of first row and inside loops of last row, slip stitch last 6 sc together.

Fasten off.

Weave doubled yarn through end of rows at top, tie tightly, secure ends.
Pompom may be added.

Turn up last 6 single crochet for brim.

The "Folding Row"

The folding row prevents the brim from falling over the child's eyes.
The brim or cuff is done in Back Loop Only SC for 6 sc on the pattern (9 sc in the picture), one Front Loop Only SC, then continue in Back Loop Only SC.
The Front Loop SC is the turning row.

Full Term Baby Cap

Materials:
Baby/Sport yarn, two colors
G-hook

Instructions:
With color A, ch 35.

• Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each st of next 33 sts. In last st, draw up a loop. Finish the sc with color B. Ch 1, turn.
• Row 2: sc in back loop of 30 sc. Leave 4 sts unworked. Do NOT ch 1, turn.
• Row 3: skip 1st sc, sc in rem 29 sc. Change color; ch 1. Turn. (Pull working threads to back each time.)
• Row 4: sc across, picking up and sc in loop for 30th sc; sc in last 4 sts; ch 1, turn.
• Row 5: sc in 34 sts, changing color in last st. Ch 1, Turn.
• Row 6: sc in 26 sts. Do NOT ch 1. Turn.
• Row 7: Skip 1st st, sc in rem 25 sts, change color in last st. Ch 1. Turn.
• Row 8: sc in 25 sts, sc in loop, sc to end = 34 sts. Ch 1. Turn.
• Row 9: sc in 34 sts; change color in last st. Ch 1. Turn.

Repeat rows 2-9 for 55 rows or 14 short row groups.
End with the shortest group.
Change to color A in last st, Ch 1. Turn.

Fold piece with the last row worked facing you and the chain row at the back.
Sl st tog by picking up the front loop and then the chain loop.
Sl st to end.

Cut a length (8") to draw top together.
Work drawstring through the top tightly.
Fasten. Cut ends.

Turn cap inside out.
Conceal yarn ends.
Complete with a pompom.

Reverse the colors for another cap.

This cap is easy, fun, and enjoyed by the maker as well as the wearer.
