Mittens with Thumbs
Gauge: 7 sc and 6 rows = 2 inches
Yarn:Red Heart "Comfort"
Hooks: 4.50 mm and 4.00 mm
Size of mitten:
6 inches around palm, length of palm -4 inches,
2 ¼ inches of ribbing.
Next Row: Opening for Thumb:
Sc in each of the next 8 stitches,
chain 5 and skip next 3 sts, sc in each of the next 9 sts.
Thumb will be worked later.
Foundation Row for Ribbing:
Sc x 1, sc2tog, sc x 3, sc2tog, sc x 5, sc2tog, sc x 4, sc2tog, sc
x 1.
Ribbing:
Change to 4.00 mm hook
Chain 11
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 ( 7 times more, ending with a Row 3)
Finishing:
Working through back loops of last row and free loops of starting
chain,
slipstitch ends of ribbing together.
Thumb: Use 4.50 mm hook. Work in continuous rounds - do not join.
With top of mitten facing you, join yarn in first unworked
sc
at right hand side of thumb opening. Chain 1.
Round 1: Sc in same st as the chain 1, sc in the next 2
sts,
sc in each of the 5 free loops of the chain 5.
Continue working on these 8 sts for a total of 4 rounds.
Next Round: Sc2tog 4 times. Cut yarn.
Weave end through the 4 remaining sts.
Weave in all loose ends.
