Scrap Yarn Granny Hat

Choices of yarn for main color and round 4 of the granny square.

Phentex Dynasty
Rounds 1 – 3 are scrap stuff, 2 or 3 strands if necessary.
Each granny is four rounds of single crochet

7 grannies, each 2 ¾ - 2 7/8 inches square,
joined into a band approx. 22 inches circumference.
Fits average lady.

Supplies:
5 mm hook
Yarn Needle
28 stitch markers for corners of motifs.
Round 1 takes approx 4 feet of yarn
Round 2 takes approx 5 feet of yarn
Round 3 takes approx 7 feet of yarn
Round 4 takes approx 12 feet of yarn.

Special instructions:
Work over starting tail as work progresses.
Finish each round with invisible bind off. (Needle Join)
Marker goes in chain-2 at each corner
and is moved to next round as work progresses.

Special Techniques:
Loop Start:
Form loop in yarn and work
first round of sc around strand of yarn.
Pull starting tail to close hole.
Weave in end. (Chain 4, join with slipstitch works well
but the loop start is neater).

Invisible Finish (Needle Join):
This technique creates 1 stitch.
Cut yarn about 6 inches from last stitch
and pull end through stitch.
Thread end on needle.
Insert needle from front to back under top 2 strands of first stitch
then under the back loop of the last stitch
made to create the top of the last stitch.
Adjust stitch to same size as the rest of the stitches and weave in the end.

Special Stitch:
Linked HDC (Lkhdc)

Insert hook under horizontal bar of previous Hdc,
YO, pull loop through.
(This takes the place of the YO of the regular Hdc).
Insert hook in the next stitch and complete as Hdc.

Special Corner for Round 4:
In corner chain-2 space of round 3 work SC, YO,
insert hook from front to back though center of round 1,
YO, pull loop through to height of round 1 corner space,
twist hook 1 turn, insert hook from front to back in Round 2 chain-2 space,
YO, pull loop through space, twist hook 1 turn,
insert hook in round 3 chain-2 space,
pull loop thorough and twist hook 1 turn, insert hook in round 4 corner,
YO, pull loop through, YO, and complete stitch.
SC in same chain-2 space.

Back Side of Granny:
In round 1 corner, hook is in front of long strand of yarn;
in round 2 corner, hook is behind yarn;
in round 3 corner yarn is in front of long strand.
This tacks down the long strand as you go.

Making the Granny Square:
Round 1 (takes about 4 feet of yarn)
Loop Start
Ch 1 in loop, sc, chain 2,** sc twice in loop, chain 2 **
Repeat from ** to ** 3 more times. Sc in loop.
Needle join to 1st chain of chain-2.

Round 2 (takes about 5 feet of yarn)
Join yarn with slipstitch in first stitch after any chain-2.
Chain 1, Sc in next stitch.
In next chain-2, work sc, chain 2, sc [corner].
** Sc in each of next 2 stitches, work corner in chain-2.**
Repeat from ** to ** 3 more times.
Needle join to first sc.

Round 3 (takes about 7 feet of yarn):
Join yarn with slipstitch 2 stitches before any chain-2,
chain 1, sc in next stitch.
** Work Sc in each of next 4 sts, work corner in next chain-2, **
Repeat from ** to ** 3 more times.
End sc in each of next 2 sts.
Needle Join to first sc.

Round 4 (takes about 12 feet of yarn):
Join yarn with slipstitch 2 sts before any ch-2.
Ch 1, sc in next stitch. Work special corner in chain-2,
[place marker in center stitch of corner]
** Sc in each of next 6 sts, special corner.**
repeat from ** to ** 3 times more.
End sc in each of next 4 stitches.
Needle Join to first sc.

Joining Motifs:
** With wrong sides together,
join yarn with a slipstitch through both loops of marked corner of both motifs,
chain 1, then slipstitch through back loop only of both motifs
to next marked corner stitch.
Slipstitch through both loops of both motifs.
Chain 1. Fasten off.
**Repeat from ** to ** until all 7 motifs are joined in a circle.

Bottom Edge:
Round 1 (done in back loop only):
Join yarn with slipstitch in any stitch except marked corners.
Sc in next stitch and each stitch to first marker.
HDC in first marker, LinkedHDC in next marker.
** Continue sc in back loop only across next motif,
HDC in marker, LinkedHDC in next marker **.
Repeat from ** to ** around hat ADDING one extra stitch in second and fourth motif.
End with slipstitch in top of first sc.
Round 2 (both loops of each sc): Chain 1, sc through both loops in next and each stitch around.
Needle join to first sc.

Top Edge:
Work round 1 of bottom edge around top of motifs.
End with needle join to top of first sc.

Crown: Worked in DC.
Use Loop Start or Chain 4; join in a ring with slipstitch.
Rnd 1: Chain 2, work 11 dc in ring
Join with ss to top of 1st DC. (12 dc)
Rnd 2: Chain 2, work 1 DC in same stitch.
Work 2 DC in each stitch around.
(24 sts) Join with ss to top of first DC.
Rnd 3: Chain 2, work 1 DC in same stitch.
Work 1 DC in next stitch.
** Work 2 DC in next stitch, 1 DC in following stitch.**
Repeat from ** to ** around.
Join with ss to top of first DC. (36 sts)
Rnd 4: Chain 2, work 1 DC in same stitch.
Work 1 DC in each of next 2 stitches
** Work 2 DC in next stitch, 1 DC in each of next 2 stitches.**
Join with ss to top of first DC. (48 sts)
Rnd 5: Chain 2, work 1 DC in same stitch.
Work 1 DC in each of next 3 stitches.
** Work 2 DC in next stitch, 1 DC in each of next 3 stitches.**
Join with ss to top of first DC. (60 sts)
Rnd 6: Chain 2, work 1 DC in same stitch.
Work 1 DC in each of next 4 stitches.
** Work 2 DC in next stitch, 1 DC in each of next 4 stitches.**
Join with ss to top of first DC. (72 sts)
Rnd 7, 8, and 9: Chain 2, work 1 DC in same stitch.
Work even around hat.
Join with ss to top of first DC.
Do not work DC in the chain of the slipstitch join.

Join Crown to Granny Band:
With wrong sides together, chain 1,
slipstitch through back loops of crown and band around.
Needle join and weave in ends.
