Shellstitch Preemie Sweater

3.25 mm Hook
Worked from Shoulder Seam down
16 inch Finished chest
3 rows in pattern = 1.125 inches
6 shells = 4 inches

PATTERN STITCH
Multiple of 3 + 1
Row 1: In 4th chain, (1 dc, ch 2, sc)
*Skip 2 chain, (2 dc, ch 2, sc)
Repeat from * across.
End with (2dc, ch 2, sc) in last chain.
Chain 2, Turn.
Row 2: (1 dc, ch 2, sc) in first ch-2 space
*(2 dc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 space.
Repeat from * across. Chain 2, Turn.

The sweater is worked as a yoke and the body added in one piece later.

Instructions:
Back and sleeves:
Chain 82
Work 27 shells across.
Work 14 more rows.
Fasten Off.

Front 1 and Sleeve:
Join yarn at starting slip knot.
Working in the free loops of the shells of the first row of the back, work 11 shells for 5 rows.
At the end of the 5th row, chain 9(added foundation row for additional shells at the beginning of the row).
Row 6: Work 2 shells into the extra chains, then work across fabric.
Work an additional 9 rows of shells.
Fasten off.

Front 2 and Sleeve:
Skip 5 shells.
Join yarn and work 11 shells into the free loops of the shells of the first row of the back.
Work 5 more rows.
At the end of Row 6 [the row just finished] add 2 more shells.

Instructions for adding more shells at the end of a row:
First added shell:
1. YO, insert hook into the first ch of the starting ch-2 , YO, pull loop through and work a chain 3.
2. (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) 2 times.(DC completed)
3. YO, insert hook in 3rd chain of the ch-3.
4. YO, and pull loop through.
5. (YO, pull through 2 loops) 2 times. (2nd DC made)
6. Chain 2, SC in 3rd chain of chain three.

Each additional shell:
1. YO, insert hook into 3rd chain of chain 3, YO, pull loop through and work a chain 3
2. (YO, pull through 2 loops on hook) 2 times.(DC completed)
3. YO, insert hook in 3rd chain of the ch-3.
4. YO, and pull loop through.
5. (YO, pull through 2 loops) 2 times. (2nd DC made)
6. Chain 2, SC in 3rd chain of chain three.
Next shell complete.

Chain 2, Turn.

Work in pattern for 9 more rows.
Fasten Off.

Add Body to Yoke:
Join yarn at inside bottom corner of Front 1.
Work the first 5 shells on the Front.
Skip first 8 shells on the Back, next shell goes in the 9th shell from outside edge.
Work 11 shells on back.
Next shell goes in the 9th shell from the outside edge of Front 2.
Work across Front 2.
Work 16 more rows to complete the body.
Do not fasten off.
Turn sweater sidewise and work shells along edge of front, adding ties as needed.
Work shells around neck opening and down the second front, adding ties as needed.

Ties go at the neck edge and midway down the front.

Here is an excellent tie for the sweater.
It is worked as part of the edging so it will not pull loose:
Make a chain 6 inches long plus 2 chains (the aluminum hook is 6 inches long
so no need to count chains -just measure with the hook)
Slip Stitch back to the sweater.
Fasten Off.

Cuffs:
Join yarn at corner of sleeve and work 1 row of shells across end of the sleeve.
Repeat for second sleeve.
Weave ribbon through ch-2 spaces of shells.

Weave in all loose ends.
