Thumbless Tunisian Mitts in the Round

Ages and Mitten sizes:
Preemie: 3 ½ inches around palm, 3 3/8 inches long
Birth to 6 months: 4 inches around palm, 4 inches long
6 months to 1 year: 4 ½ inches around palm, 4 3/8 inches long
1 to 2 years: 5 inches around palm, 5 inches long
2 to 3 years: 5 ½ inches around palm, 5 ½ inches long

Materials and Supplies:
28 stitch (baby) Yarn
Doublepointd Knitting Needles and Crohook size 3.50 mm
a A short 3.50 mm cro-hook is needed.
The easiest way to get this (in Canada) will be purchase
a 3.50 mm bamboo crochet hook and shape the back end into a hook.
Stitch markers, yarn needle, small ruler.
The gauge is only approximate, follow the measurements for more accuracy.

Gauge:
Ribbing: With 2 strands together and working in
K1P1 ribbing - 7 stitches, 8 rows = 1 inch.
Palm and Back: 1 strand worked in Tunisian Knit Stitch: 8 rows, 6 ½ stitches = 1 inch

Smallest 2 sizes in ( ), largest 3 sizes in [ ].
If only I number is in the brackets, it applies to all sizes in that bracket.

To determine the correct amount of yarn to use with the “Long Tail Cast-On",
wrap the yarn around 2 needles held together
1 wrap for each stitch to be cast-on.
Add 2 inches of yarn for good luck.

Instructions:
With 2 strands together, cast on (24, 26) [28, 30, 32] stitches
Working on doublepointed needles,
K1P1 ribbing for (1 ¼, 1 3/8) [1 ½, 1 ¾, 1 ¾] inches.
Do not count the loops on the needle as part of the length of the ribbing.

Using 1 strand of yarn.
Transfer the loops to the crohook and work
in Tunisian Knit Stitch for (1 7/8, 2 ¼) [2 5/8, 3, 3 3/8] inches.
Cast off the stitches using the second ball of yarn.
Then shape the top.

Finishing the top: All sizes:
Work 2 rounds of *2tog, TKS in each of next 2 stitches. Repeat from *
Round 3: work 2tog around
Continue working 2tog around the mitt until 8 stitches remain.
Fasten off both strands of yarn and pull them through the remaining loops.
Pull firmly to close hole at top of mitt. Weave in all loose ends.

2tog, 2tog, 2tog, final stitch. Normal return.

Birth to 6 months:
Row 1: With 1 loop on hook, work 2tog, 2tog, 3 stitches, 2tog, 2tog, 2 stitches,
2tog, 2tog, 3 stitches, 2tog, 2tog, final stitch. Normal return.
Row 2: With 1 loop on hook, work 2tog, 3tog, 2tog, 2 stitches,
2tog, 3tog, 2tog, final stitch.

6 months to 1 year:
Row 1: With 1 loop on hook, work 2tog, 2tog, 4 stitches, 2tog, 2tog, 2 stitches,
2tog, 2tog, 4 stitches, 2tog, 2tog, final stitch. Normal return.

Finishing -all sizes:
Slip stitch to center stitch on top, fold mitten wrong sides tog,
slip stitch through both layers of fabric to bottom of cuff.

Make second mitt to match.

Join mitts with a cord of (30, 32) [34, 36, 38] chains.

Weave in all loose ends.
