Tunisian Moss Stitch Hat
Hat fits 3 - 6 month Toddler

Supplies:
3.00 mm crochet hook for ribbing
4.00 mm cro-hook for crown
4.00 mm afghan hook for earflaps
2 balls Bernat Baby Soft yarn

Instructions:
With 3.00 mm crochet hook, chain 20.
Row 1: Work single crochet in second chain from hook
and each chain across. Chain 1, Turn.
Row 2: Working in Back Loop Only, work 1 sc in each sc across.
Chain 1, Turn.
Repeat Row 2 for a total of 60 rows. (30 ridges)

Slightly stretched, fabric should be 17 1/2 inches long.

With wrong sides together, slip stitch back loop of last row
with free loops of first row together. dChain 1 and place marker in loop.

Turn work sidewise. Change to 4.00 mm cro-hook.
NOTE!: Technique for using a cro-hook to work in the round. NOTE!
Pick up a loop in the end of every row and chain-1 turning chain.
When you have 10 - 15 loops on the hook, push the loops to the other
end of the hook, join the second ball of yarn, and work off the stitches.
(YO, pull through 1 loop, *YO, pull through 2 loops on hook.)
Continue to work off loops by YO, pull through 2 loops.
The rounds are not joined and you don't have to mark the rounds.

Round 2: Work Moss Stitch around. (*TSS in first stitch, TPS in next stitch)
Repeat from * around, alternating casting on and casting off as needed.
The last stitch of round 2 must be TSS. Add another stitch at the end
of the round if you need to.

Round 3: Continue in Moss Stitch. TPS in row 2 TSS, TSS in round 2 TPS.

The first 10 - 12 rounds will form a flat disc instead of a tube.
This is needed to provide enough stitches for the ribbing to stretch.
By the time you get to the top of the hat, it will be a tube.

Continue in Moss Stitch (TPS goes in the TSS of the previous round,
TSS goes in the TPS of the previous round.) for 4 1/2 inches.

Shape Top:
Work 3 rounds in the following pattern:
TSS2Tog, TPS2tog, TSS, TPS, TSS, TPS
Take note that the 3rd round in this decrease pattern will
be quite difficult to do.
Fasten off yarns and weave in ends.
Turn hat inside out and weave a doubled strand of yarn
through the last round and pull tight.

Add Ear Flaps:
Note: The earflap with the buttonhole strap goes on the left
for boys and unisex hats; on the right for girls hats.

With hat turned inside out, and using 3.00 mm crochet hook,
join yarn at the top of the ribbing in the 3rd ridge from the seam.

Foundation:
*Sc in ridge, chain 1, sc in valley, chain 1. Repeat from * for
a total of seven ridges, ending with sc in 7th ridge.
Turn work and change to 4.00 mm afghan hook.

Row 1: Pick up a loop in each sc and chain-1 space across.
Normal return.
Work even in Moss Stitch for 6 rows.
Decrease:
Working in pattern, 2tog at beginning and end of each
and every row until 7 stitches remain.

Flap should be 3 1/4 - 3 1/2 inches long.

If this flap is the button side, just bind off and weave in end;
If this flap has the buttonhole strap continue even on 7 stitches.

Buttonhole strap:
Work 2 rows even in pattern.
Buttonhole row:
Pick up first 3 stitches, skip center stitch,
finish row.
return:
Cast off first 3 loops, chain 1 over skipped center stitch,
cast off remaining loops.
Work 3 more rows even, work buttonhole row.
Work another 3 rows even, work buttonhole row.
Work 2 more rows even and bind off.

Finishing:
Sew button 1/2 inch from end of button flap.
Weave in all ends.

Tunisian Moss Stitch Mitts
Mitts fit 3 - 6 month toddler

Dimensions of mitten:
4 inches long from bottom of cuff
to tip of fingers
(1 inch of ribbing, 2 1/2 inches for palm,
1/2 inch for shaping top.)
4 inches wide across palm before folding
in half and seaming.

Materials and supplies:
1 ball Bernat Baby Soft yarn.
(Yarn left over from the hat is enough for the mitts.)
3.00 mm crochet hook
4.00 mm afghan hook

Instructions:
Cuff Ribbing
Leave a 20 inch tail for sewing the seam.
With the 3.00 mm hook, chain 9.
Sc in the 2nd chain from hook and each across. Chain 1, Turn.
Working in Back Loop Only Single Crochet, work 10 ridges (20 rows)

Palm and back of mitt.
Turn the ribbing strip sidewise.
Change to 4.00 mm afghan hook.
Pick up a loop in the end of each row and in the chain 1 turning chain
of the 3rd to 8th ridges for a total of 26 loops. Normal Return.
Work 12 more rows in Moss Stitch.

Moss Stitch:
Row 1: With 1 loop on hook *TSS in next loop, TPS in next loop.
Repeat from * to last loop. Insert hook under
both strands of last loop and pull loop through. Normal return.
row 2: With 1 loop on hook *TPS in next loop, TSS in next loop.
Repeat from * to last loop. Insert hook under
both strands of last loop and pull loop through. Normal return.
Repeat (rows 1 and 2) 5 more times.

Shape top:
Row 1: With 1 loop on hook,2tog, 8 stitches in pattern, 2tog,
2tog, 8 stitches in pattern,2tog, last stitch.
Row 2: With 1 loop on hook,2tog, 6 stitches in pattern, 2tog,
2tog, 6 stitches in pattern,2tog, last stitch.
Row 3: With 1 loop on hook,2tog, 4 stitches in pattern, 2tog,
2tog, 4 stitches in pattern,2tog, last stitch.
Fasten Off.

Fold in half with wrong sides together.
Using the 20 inch stasrting tail, sew the seam. Fasten off.

Make second mitt to match.

Connecting cord:
Join yarn at seam of first mitt with a single crochet,
make a 20 inch long chain, join to second mitt at seam,
single crochet in each chain back to first mitt. Fasten off.

Finishing:
Weave in all loose ends.
